my Super-Bowl Sunday

The truth must be told, the instant kick-off occurred and the football was booted up to the heavens, I was already looking forward to the half-time show. Until I got a phone call from my brother telling me history might go down, if indeed the New England Patriots beat the New York Giants of course, they would be only the second team in NFL history to go through a complete season undefeated. That I had to see. So in respect for NFL history, I forced myself to endure the first half.

Mind you, I watched the majority of the game alone, which blowed. Although half time is a whole different story at my house. Traditionally, most of my family and I watch the half-time show together, mainly to judge the entertainers and compare them with very popular middle-eastern singers. And that’s when my mom asks if Britney Spears is performing, as she does every year. And like every year, I remind her, that no celebrity entertains the Super Bowl half-time show twice. Then she usually rambles on about how she should be there instead of these long-haired rockers that resemble females. All this while my sister rants on about witnessing Prince and Shania Twain in concert, in other words..the half-time performance sucked to them. If not anyone else, I rather enjoyed the  half-time show as I was free-falling to the Heartbreakers music. I sadly missed Alicia Key’s pre-game performance, but was relieved when I found out she sang that annoying, annoying song (which by the way I think is beneath her caliber). Moving on. Before we get to the second half, you must know that my American-football awareness is imperfect; In terms of NFL history and all-time greats, I’m just as lost as your girlfriends, wives, and geekish/womanly husbands. On the contrary, understanding the actual game and rules has always been trouble-free as I played enough times to learn the rich man’s sport. The underdog (his name is T.J.) in me bursted out in the third Q as I aimlessly started cheering for the Giants.. as if I sped-walked the unfriendly streets of New York for decades. The score of 7 – 3 for New England transported BORED signals to my brain, which lead to the realization that I would rather study my foot-nails instead of watch the remaining quarter. I usually watch the super bowl every year, and was wondering why it didn’t mean as much this year. Is it possible that my cranium is so jam-packed with boundless amounts of sports-relating information and knowledge, that I’m exhausting a tad bit? And because of that, I have no more energy to worship another game, even if I tried? I mean nobody can do it all, and who would want to anyway? So, my brother (big football fan) rings me back, he goes “are you thinking what I’m thinking, did you see that shit? “(Apparently an unattainable, long bomb, was incredibly caught by David Tyre, which gave life to the trailing Giants) ..I go, “I’m writing how shitty football is compared to other sports..”.. I laughed so hard my neck muscles were threatening to pop, and if you met my elder brother, it’s virtually impossible to out-laugh him. I seen the catch just before the fourth Q, and it was incredible.. that’s for sure. Following that, during early stages of the fourth Q, we got in to a nasty, heated quarrel about the pros and cons of American-Football. As Mr. Bonobo insulted soccer, the true competitor in me lashed out as I rebutted and busted out the big guns..

Within American-Football, the amount of lengthened breaks is preposterous, no matter the altitude of hilarity in the commercials. How the masses devote themselves to a game that breaks every few minutes is beyond my comprehension. And people wonder why football is the number one sport in America. It’s obvious that the matching 40 percent of Americans who can’t locate North America on a map if their lives depended on it… require the 45 seconds to a minute between plays to sluggishly comprehend what’s going on in front of them…Playing foot ball is a whole different ball-game…literally. To me, catching a a few long bombs, tackling violently, or even taking a back-breaking hit, appeals tremendously. The 4th Q captured my attention dramatically…It was entertaining. Foot ball is a game of two teams, that alone blows my mind. Although, sitting on the side-line while the game is on the line is inconceivable for me, that I give credit to them players. All in all, I enjoyed my Super Bowl Sunday. Maybe one American styled foot ball game every early February can fit in to my television’s timetable. I’m delighted the Giants won, after all, there’s no such thing as perfect. And lastly, I learned something yesterday.. you can’t change what people love man, you either have an open-mind or you’re dim-witted with a colourless brain.
